If you didn’t grow up in Halton Hills, you might assume that Acton and Georgetown are the same place. While they’re both part of the Town of Halton Hills today, each community has its own unique character, history, and identity.

Having grown up in Georgetown, I can tell you there was always a friendly rivalry between the two communities. They each had their own events, traditions, and local pride, with many of the larger festivals and activities taking place in Georgetown. Today, that dynamic has evolved.

While Acton and Georgetown have each maintained their own distinct personalities, they now work together as part of the Town of Halton Hills, whether it’s through community events, recreation programs, or local sports. It’s one municipality made up of two communities that each have something special to offer.

Where Are They Located?

Georgetown is closer to Milton, Brampton, Mississauga, and Highway 401; whereas Acton is farther northwest, towards Guelph and Kitchener. Both are in close proximity to Toronto (within 45 minutes) and have access to the GO and VIA Train service for those who enjoy attending concerts and sporting events but still enjoy the quieter side of living in a smaller community.

A little local fun fact: If you’re travelling between Acton and Georgetown, you’ll pass through a little hamlet called Limehouse, which almost feels like the natural halfway point between the two. It’s home to the Limehouse Conservation Area, where you’ll find remnants of the area’s old limestone kilns tucked into the Niagara Escarpment. For locals, Limehouse is one of those familiar spots that has always helped connect the two communities. My family and I enjoy visiting and hiking through the trail; it’s one of our favourite spots.

And if you grew up around here, there’s another Acton reference you’ll probably recognize immediately: “It’s worth the drive to Acton!”

The famous Olde Hide House slogan became so well known through radio and TV commercials in the 1980s that it practically became part of the town’s identity. Sadly, it closed a few years ago, but it was a tourist attraction for many years, and whenever you mention to strangers that you’re from Acton, they always respond with the famous tagline “It’s Worth the drive to Acton!”

Community Feel

Georgetown is definitely larger and busier than it was when I grew up here. As the population has grown, so has the need for more shopping, restaurants and housing, including newer subdivisions, condos and townhomes. Georgetown South, in particular, has exploded over the years and feels like a community of its own!

Growing up in Georgetown 40 years ago, Georgetown South wasn’t even a thing. Much of the area was still open fields, separated from the rest of town by the familiar Hungry Hollow hill, where we would spend winter days tobogganing.

Today, that same area looks completely different, with busy roads, established neighbourhoods and thousands of families calling Georgetown South home. It’s one of those changes that really shows just how much Georgetown has grown.

Acton feels a little more like the Georgetown I remember growing up in, with its historic charm, small-town feel and rural surroundings. There’s a real sense of community here.

Living close to the schools, we’ve gotten to know so many neighbourhood families, whether it’s stopping to chat while we’re out in the front yard or saying hello on an evening walk.

There’s something really warm and comforting about having friends just down the street. You can walk over for a BBQ or a pool day, and the kids can hop on their bikes to visit their friends nearby. It’s that easy, close-knit neighbourhood feel that makes Acton such a special place to call home.

Georgetown and Acton Real Estate

When it comes to housing, Georgetown offers a wide variety of options, from established neighbourhoods to newer developments. In historic Downtown Georgetown, projects such as The McGibbon on Main offer condo living right in the heart of the community, while the Mill Street condos are bringing something new to the former site of the Georgetown Memorial Arena.

If you’re looking for more space and a backyard, Georgetown South continues to grow with newer neighbourhoods and housing options. I remember when development first started in this part of town, and I still can’t believe how much it has grown! There are still those smaller pockets of Georgetown that hold onto the character I remember.

The streets around the Delrex nighbourhood have that well established feeling, while the Queen Street area is home to beautiful heritage properties and streets filled with history. It’s a nice reminder that even as Georgetown continues to grow, you can still find those charming, close-knit neighbourhoods that have been part of the community for generations. 

Acton, on the other hand, offers a great mix of detached family homes, properties with more space, and rural living just outside town. One of my favourite parts of Acton is its beautiful century homes.

You’ll spot many of them throughout the community, including properties recognized with Halton Hills heritage plaques. They add so much character and are a wonderful reminder of Acton’s history and small-town roots!

Schools in Acton and Georgetown

Both Acton and Georgetown offer a variety of school options for families, including public, Catholic and French Immersion programs. As Georgetown has grown, particularly in Georgetown South, new schools have become an important part of supporting the growing number of families in the community.

One of the nice things about both Acton and Georgetown is how connected many of the schools feel to their surrounding neighbourhoods. You’ll often see kids walking or biking to school and families getting to know one another through school activities, sports and community events. For families considering a move to either community, school boundaries and available programs are definitely worth exploring as part of your home search.

Parks & Recreation

Georgetown offers plenty of options for getting outside and staying active, including the Hungry Hollow trail system, Cedarvale Park, Dominion Gardens Park, Gellert Community Centre and Mold-Masters SportsPlex, just to name a few. The Town of Halton Hills also offers a wide range of recreation programs for children and adults, making it easy for families to get involved and stay active within the community.

Acton may be smaller, but it certainly isn’t short on beautiful outdoor spaces and recreation facilities. Fairy Lake and Prospect Park are some of my personal favourites. The kids can spend time at the playground, and then the whole family can enjoy a walk around the lake and take in the views. It’s one of those places that really captures Acton’s small-town charm.

Acton also has its own arena and indoor soccer facility, giving local families convenient options for sports and recreation right within the community.

Shopping & Dining

Georgetown offers a larger selection of big-box stores and restaurant chains, but some of my favourites are the local gems. The Copper Kettle in Glen Williams is a longtime favourite, with a beautiful patio and some of the best fish and chips around! Downtown Georgetown is also a great spot for charming cafés, restaurants and locally owned shops.

Acton has a smaller selection, but plenty of longtime community favourites, including Tanners Restaurant, known for family favourites, live music and its large patio.

Which Community Is Right for You?

Choose Georgetown if you’re looking for more amenities, commuting options to the GTA, newer subdivisions, and a larger selection of shopping and dining.

Choose Acton if you love small-town charm, a close-knit community, and a quieter, slower pace of life.

Both offer something a little different, and that’s part of what makes Halton Hills such a great place to call home!
